Q: I?ve heard that the flying in South Wales is the best for paragliding in the UK. Is this true?

A: Scotland ultimately has the biggest sites but poor weather. The further south you go the better the weather tends to be. South Wales is as far south as you can get in the UK and still have decent sized hills so yes, we are probably in the best place in Britain .

Q: It seems to have rained for weeks. Do we actually get much flying in the UK?

A: We do get a fair amount of flying in this country although during a particularly bad spell of weather it may not seem like it! Once experienced you should be able to fly 1 day in 3 in the UK on average.

As with all weather dependant sports, while under training a little patience can be required at times but the rewards are vast in comparison, there really are few sports that can compare to free flying. It can change your life.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO HAVE REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS WHEN LEARNING TO PARAGLIDE IN THE U.K. COMPLETING THE FULL COURSE WILL PROBABLY TAKE YOU A FEW MONTHS BECAUSE OF THE UNRELIABILITY OF THE BRITISH WEATHER - YOU WILL PROBABLY NEED TO REBOOK A FEW TIMES AND IT IS FRUSTRATING, BUT IF YOU PERSEVERE THE SPORT CAN AND WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE. WE FIND THAT THIS IS A NATURAL WEEDING OUT PROCESS - STUDENTS WHO ARE NOT PATIENT ENOUGH TO COMPLETE THEIR TRAINING ARE NOT SUITABLE TO LEARN TO PARAGLIDE ANYWAY FOR SAFETY REASONS. OUR LOCAL CLUB HAS OVER 500 QUALIFIED MEMBERS SO PLENTY GET THROUGH THE TRAINING.

Q: You keep mentioning "students", what exactly do you mean?

A: Anyone under training, simple as that.

Q: If I stay in or around Abergavenny for a few days on my qualification course and we have a day or two of untrainable weather, is there anything else to do?

A: The Abergavenny area is used as a base for people visiting the area for outdoor pursuits. There is a range of things to do, with hill walking, quad racing, mountain biking and canoeing just to name a few and the indoor climbing centre at Llangorse is always popular, non weather dependant and very impressive when seen for the first time.

Good eating places are available all over Abergavenny and if you need advice on the better ones ask Paul, he's probably been in them all!

If its nightlife you want, you'll find that in Abergavenny too.
